Call for Papers : Photography and models: histories of the nude / Photographie et modèles : le nu et ses histoires

The sixth issue of the journal Photographica aims to explore the question of the nude model in photography. Following Wendy Grossman’s study of the model Adrienne Fidelin (published in Photographica no. 2 (April 2021) in a study that is both deconstructivist and analytical of the uses of the medium) and building on a reflection on the very genre of nude photography – both female and male – this new issue of Photographica (April 2023) seeks to question the role of the model in the history of photography: How can we consider and look at this historically massive part of photographic production today, and to what extent can it represent a subject of study? What does the object “nude photography” reveal with regard to processes of normalization, domination, and production in the history of photography? How does this photographic form influence its circulation and lead to new modes of distribution? What is a model in photography and how can the history of photography deal with this subject?

Pour son dossier thématique, le sixième numéro de la revue Photographica souhaite explorer la question du modèle nu en photographie. Dans une perspective à la fois déconstructiviste et analytique des usages de la photographie et dans l’extension d’une réflexion sur le genre même de la photographie de nu – féminin comme masculin –, ce nouveau numéro de Photographica (avril 2023) veut interroger l’actualité de la question du modèle dans l’histoire de la photographie : comment considérer et regarder aujourd’hui cette part historiquement massive de la production photographique et à quelle condition peut-elle être un sujet d’étude ? Que révèle l’objet « photographie de nu » dans l’histoire de la photographie en termes de normalisation, de domination et de production ? Comment cette forme photographique conditionne-t-elle sa diffusion et invente-t-elle de nouveaux modèles de distribution ? Qu’est-ce qu’un modèle en photographie et comment l’histoire de la photographie peut-elle être à même de traiter cet objet ?

Submission guidelines

• Deadline to submit articles: June 15, 2022
• Articles should be submitted in French or English.
• They should not exceed 35,000 characters (spaces and notes included).
• They should also be anonymised. In a separate document, please include name, e-mail address, position, and institutional affiliation (university, research unit), along with a list of publications for the author(s).
• Suggested illustrations (15 max.) with captions and credits can be joined.
• Article submissions will be evaluated in double-blind peer-review. They may be accepted, accepted with modifications, or refused.
• Submissions should be sent to: redaction@photographica-revue.fr.
